Can You Repair Puncture?

Can You Repair Puncture?

Factors Determining Tyre Repairability

  1. Location of the Puncture:
    • Tread Area: Repairable if within the central ¾ (minor repair area) and the puncture is ≤6mm in diameter. Driving on a flat tyre may cause irreparable damage.
    • Sidewall: Not repairable due to high structural stress and risk of failure.
    • Shoulder Area: Also not repairable.

  1. Size of the Puncture:
    • Maximum repairable diameter is 6mm. Larger damage, splits, cuts, or gouges require tyre replacement.
  2. Tyre Condition:
    • Legal tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm. Repairs are not possible if tread depth is below this or if sidewalls show bulging or exposed cords.
  3. Run-Flat Tyres:
    • Cannot be repaired due to difficulty assessing internal structural damage caused by driving on the punctured tyre.

Risks of Driving on a Flat Tyre

  • Sidewall Damage: Driving on a deflated tyre can crush and damage the sidewall, making repairs impossible.
  • Structural Weakening: Prolonged low-pressure driving can lead to mottling, chattering, or dislocation, compromising safety.

Repair Methods:

  1. PRP (Mushroom Plug): Most reliable and safe method.
  2. Wick or Patch Repairs: Not recommended due to inadequate internal inspection and potential for failure.
